THE TRANSLATOR
THE ALL-EMBRACING NET OF VIEWS The Brahmajála Sutta and its Commentarial Exegesis
The aim of the Buddha in expounding the Brahmajála Sutta is to elaborate a "net" of sixty-two cases capable of, catching all possible speculative views on the nature of the self and the world. The Discourse succinctly describes the situation cut of which each view arises, and then goes on to show the general conditional basis for man's speculative flights. It explains how man's speculative disposition holds him in bondage to the wheel of birth and death, and how by the development of insight he can cut through the chain of theories and opinions to arrive at the state of enlightened liberation.
The present work is an English translation of the Sutta and the exegetical literature that has built up around it, including its classical commentary and two sub-commentaries. It contains the first attempt at a large-scale translation from the sub-commentaries, a stratum of Buddhist literature rich in insights into the philosophical and psychological core of the Dhamma. Included as well are three digressional tracts from the exegetical literature, among them a long treatise on the Páramitás (Perfections) and the Bodhisattva ideal, which throws a valuable sidelight on a rarely known aspect of Theraváda Buddhism.
A lengthy introduction elucidates the key points of the discourse and explains the place of the Brahmajála in the overall structure of Buddhist thought.
