"And they gave those islands the name of America"— with these words a 16th-century Moscow chronicler first informed Russians of the discovery of a new continent beyond the Atlantic Ocean. Since then Russian interest in the United States, in all the major events of its history and in the life of the American people, has continued unabated.

The collection of articles entitled A Russian Discovery of America introduces the reader to the essays, travel notes, diaries, recollections and comments of America written by Russian authors, scholars, scientists and travellers over the period from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century. Among those whose writings are included are the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, the renowned scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, the scholar and chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev, the painter Vassily Vereshchagin, the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the writers Lev Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and many others.
